DEFINITION: The Director of Surgical Services is a registered professional nurse who assumes the administrative responsibility for all activities within Pre-Admissions, OR Scheduling, Operating Rooms, Central Sterile Processing, Pre-Op Area, Pain Management, and PACU. The Director is accountable for planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating quality patient care services rendered to all patients during the peri-operative stage to ensure that all patient care needs of a diverse and complex nature are effectively and efficiently served. The Director supervises all nursing, technical, and ancillary staff in surgical services, identifying and resolving problems in a quick and decisive manner. The Director must create an environment that fosters teamwork and provides job satisfaction for all staff members, as well as effectively assess and plan for the professional growth of each staff member while utilizing the abilities, knowledge, and experience of each. The Director is accountable for the budget, staffing, nursing care hours, and patient acuity system, initiation of data collection and analysis to develop effective systems, and the monitoring of effeciency and productivity.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Current License by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing to practice as a Registered Nurse, Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS). Bachelor's Degree (BSN) from four-year college or university; One to two years related experience and/or training.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Masters preferred, must be familiar with the Nurse Practice Act, Joint Commission Requirements, AORN Recommended Guidelines (for Operating Room), and Patients' Bill of Rights.

RN - Surgery

DEFINITION: The Registered Nurse, Operating Room delivers direct patient care in the intra-operative period of the patient's surgical experience through the framework of the nursing process. Provides a safe, efficient, and caring environment for individual surgical patients. Presents with a broad surgical knowledge base, instant recall of nursing science, diversity of thought and action, stamina, and the flexibility needed for peri-operative nursing. Understands surgical anatomy, physiologic alterations and their consequences for the patient, intra-operative risk factors, potentials for patient injury and the means of preventing them, and psychosocial implications of surgery for the patient and significant others. The Registered Nurse, Operating Room anticipates the needs of the patient and surgical team and rapidly intitiates appropriate nursing interventions. He/she evaluates the safety, cost, outcomes of patient service. The Registered Nurse, Operating Room circulates proficiently and independently. This person teaches and acts as a preceptor to new employees, students, or visitors.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Current license by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing to practice as a Registered Nurse. Must possess Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers. Possess or be willing to obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification (within 6 months of hire). New hires that have expired BLS will be scheduled for the first available class during orientation.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Previous Operating Room experience preferred, Computer Skills, and knowledge of CPSI.

RN - Acute Care

DEFINITION: With minimal supervision, the PACU staff nurse delivers direct patient care in the peri-operative period of the patient’s surgical experience through implementation of the framework of the nursing process. This nurse provides a safe, efficient, and caring environment for individual surgical patients. Functions provided by the PACU staff nurse include direct patient care in the Preoperative, Holding, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Phase II, and Pain Management areas of Surgical Services. Employees supervised include nursing assistants, unit clerks, and transportation personnel. Duties require management of confidential information concerning patient records, department documents, and hospital information. Frequent use of nursing judgment involving general policy and procedure is required. Provides input into budget needs regarding use and need of equipment, communicates with other department personnel daily, administers to patients from pediatric to geriatric ages, and performs all other duties assigned.  Adheres to the principles and guidelines of McBride Orthopedic Hospital.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Current License by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing to practice as a Registered Nurse, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (PALS) within 3 months of employment. Surgery Tech

DEFINITION: The Surgery Technician handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment utilized during the surgical procedure. The technologist must understand the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
